far-fetched
2020.12.06
Meaning:
‘far-fetched’ means ‘unlikely to be true or realistic’. It is a natural way to say you don’t believe something. For example, imagine someone told you they had once beaten 5 guys in a fight. You might think, ‘5 guys at once? Hmmm. Sounds a bit far-fetched.’ In 2019, a British drama (called ‘Coronation Street’) planned a story about a global pandemic (パンデミック), but the producers decided not to make that story because it seemed too far-fetched…
Example:
A: Do you believe Nigel really did go on a date with a famous supermodel?
B: Seems a bit far-fetched to me. I think he’s just showing off.
Talking Point(s):
Some people believe the Earth is actually flat. Do you think they might be right, or is this idea just too far-fetched?
