Every cloud has a silver lining

2019.10.30

Meaning:

‘Every cloud has a silver lining’ means ‘Every bad situation includes something good’. ‘Lining’ means ‘the different material inside a curtain or a coat’. Clouds are bad, so ‘a silver lining’ means ‘the good thing inside a bad thing’. For example, imagine you lost your job (the ‘cloud’). Then imagine losing your job made you look for a new job, and you got a better one (‘the silver lining’).

Example:

A: Are you ok these days? Your divorce is final now, right?
B: Yeah. It’s been hard. I’ve been so stressed that I lost 10 kilos…So every cloud has a silver lining, I guess.
A: Well, sure. I think going to the gym would be less painful, but I’m glad you’re trying to be positive.

Talking Point(s):

Do you think that every cloud has a silver lining?
