Elbow Grease

2018.11.14

Meaning:

Did you do a big clean-up at the end of last year? What kind of cleaning products do you use? Whatever else you used, I’m sure you used elbow grease. ‘grease’ means a semi-solid oil. If we sweat a lot, our skin becomes greasy (same meaning as oily). So if we work really hard doing some cleaning we sweat and develop elbow grease. Elbow grease sounds like a cleaning product, but it’s really just an idiom that means ‘hard work (cleaning)’.

Example:

A: I don’t know what to do! I can’t remove this mark from the bathtub.
B: You need to put more elbow grease into it.
A: Look! I’m putting lots of elbow grease into it! But the mark isn’t coming off.

Talking Point(s):

Is there a similar expression to elbow grease in Japanese?
