Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater

2017.09.06

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater

Meaning:

Traditionally, we washed babies in bathtubs, the water got dirty and then we threw the dirty water out the window. Imagine a baby is a good, new idea. Sometimes good, new ideas are surrounded by bad ideas. We use the saying ‘Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater’ to mean ‘Don’t throw the good idea out with the bad ideas’. So, for example, I made a cake today. I’ve used the same recipe before, but this time I added apple to it. I didn’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater, though, so I didn’t change anything else in the recipe.

Example:

A: Ugh. I see Trump is still trying to kill Obamacare.
B: Well, Obamacare has a lot of problems…
A: Sure, but don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, right? Fix the problems; don’t kill the entire system.

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever thrown the baby out with the bathwater?
