Dead ringer / spitting image
2019.09.19
Meaning:
‘Dead ringer’ and ‘spitting image’ both mean ‘someone who looks exactly the same as…’. For example, if a person looks exactly like Prime Minister Abe, you can say ‘My friend is a dead ringer for Abe’ or ‘My friend is the spitting image of Abe’. We always say ‘a dead ringer for’ and ‘the spitting image of’.
Example:
A: You are the spitting image of your grandfather when he was young.
B: Thank you. I like my grandfather! But I don’t think I look much like him.
A: You do. Seriously. You’re a dead ringer.
Talking Point(s):
Do you know anyone who is a dead ringer for a famous person?
