chop chop

Meaning:

There are a lot of different ways to say ‘Hurry up’ in English. You can say, ‘Come on!’, ‘Get a move on!’ or ‘Quickly!’. My favourite expression for ‘Hurry up’ is ‘Chop chop’. It *sounds* fast. This expression came into English hundreds of years ago; and it came from Chinese sailors! English sailors heard Chinese sailors using a word that sounded like ‘chop chop’ to them when they wanted them to hurry up. So the expression became popular among English sailors, and eventually other English speakers. Nowadays, ‘chop chop’ is used mainly in UK English. It is a little aggressive and very informal, so it is best to use it with people who are younger than you.

Example:

A: Come on! Let’s go! Chop chop!
B: Don’t you say ‘chop chop’ to me! I’m not a child.
A: Ok, ok. But please hurry up. We’ll miss the start of the movie!

Talking Point(s):

What’s your favourite expression for ‘Hurry up!’?
