Brainchild (idiom)

2016.10.19

Meaning:

When someone has an idea, we can call it their ‘brainchild’. This comes from the image of growing an idea inside your brain, sort of like growing a baby! This can be both positive and negative. We usually use this to identify *who* had the idea. So we tend to use possessives like ‘my’, ‘her’, ‘Mariko’s’, ‘our’ or ‘whose’ before the word ‘brainchild’.

Example:

A: Whose brainchild was it to open the windows in the middle of winter?
B: It was Steve’s. He never feels the cold.

A: This business plan is our best yet!
B: I agree. It was Yuka’s brainchild; you should thank her.

Talking Point(s):

Does Japanese have a similar expression to ‘brainchild’?
