bluster
2017.09.20
Meaning:
Recently Donald Trump called Kim Jong Un ‘rocket man’ on twitter. A newspaper responded ‘If Kim is Rocket Man, Trump is Bluster Man. ‘To bluster’ means ‘to speak aggressively and loudly and to have no effect’. It is a negative word we use to describe macho talk that doesn’t work. We can use it as a verb (ie He is blustering.) or as a noun (ie He is full of bluster.)
Example:
A: Oh no! The boss says he is going to fire me because I was late today.
B: Don’t worry. He’s just blustering. He needs you.
A: I’m not sure. He was so angry…
B: That’s his way. He’s full of bluster.
Talking Point(s):
Do you think Kim Jong Un and Trump are just blustering or could they really start a war?
