backlash

2019.12.19

Meaning:

‘backlash’ means ‘many people suddenly reacting negatively to a social change’. ‘lash’ means a kind of hitting, so ‘backlash’ has an aggressive, negative nuance. We often use this word to talk about social problems. For example, #metoo is making big social change; since Shiori Ito’s case, the Japanese government has made some updates to its sex crime laws. But there is also backlash against #metoo. For example, so many people told Shiori Ito they would kill her that she left Japan.

Example:

A: So… Britain is really leaving the EU…
B: Yep. It’s part of a big backlash against globalization. Britain leaves EU. America chooses Trump…
A: I don’t know… I think Americans choosing Trump was part of a backlash against women in power. They didn’t want Hilary…
B: Is there really a backlash against women in power? I don’t think so…

Talking Point(s):

What issues are there backlashes against in Japan?
