Meaning:
‘alpha’ is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. So an alpha male is the ‘first’ (ie ‘top’ or ‘leader’) male in a group. The expression ‘alpha male’ originally came from biology – groups of social animals (eg monkeys or lions) usually have a leader. Sometimes that leader can be an alpha female, but it is usually an alpha male. The alpha animal usually eats first, and gets first choice of a sexual partner or partners. These days we use the expression ‘alpha male’ in casual conversation to mean a powerful, successful man.
Example:
A: I just watched an old James Bond movie. Sean Connery was so hot!
B: Meh. I’m not into alpha males. That kind of guy is only interested in cars, guns, foreign women in bikinis… it’s just showing off.
A: Really? James Bond is my ideal guy. Strong men make me feel protected.
B: Not me. I don’t like fighting over power. I want a man with a pure heart!
